The Different Types and Styles of Garage Doors
When thinking about garage doors, it's likely you imagine them as all the same. It's a common misconception that all garage doors are similar, as there are, in fact, several types and styles available for you to choose from, and the distinction goes far beyond color. That is why it is so important to be well informed before buying your own new garage door, so you can choose the perfect type, and style, to fit your home. You may end up getting more then a good looking addition to your house, you may also be increasing the profitability of a future sale.
Types
-
Roller
Probably the most common, and popular, of all garage doors, the roller type is meant for people who are looking to economize on space. As it rolls up into the overhang drum, it makes it much smaller then the average motorized door, and so can be placed into smaller garages, or those that have little space after the car is parked. They are also made from aluminum, and so light weight, making it ideal if something should happen to the motor, making the door usable until the problem is repaired.
-
Sectional
Divided into sections, each area opens up, and stores in a single space within the ceiling. It slides directly upwards, rather then pushing out of the opening, and so is great for smaller driveways, so you can wait for the doors to open, without having to stay partially stagnant in the street.
-
Up-And-Over
An attractive feature. The up-and-over design is meant for someone with a lot of space, especially for a long driveway. A short area will not allow for the needed space, as the door opens outward, and then slides up into a containment area in the ceiling. Never park close to this garage door, as once it opens, it can damage the front of the car.
-
Swing Hung
Another option that requires a large amount of space, the swing hung works the same way a regular double door does, by opening in the middle, and swinging open to either side. While traditionally these are manual, there are motorized varieties that can add something unique to a large driveway.
Styles
The specific style of a garage door will actually refer to elements such as the material used, and the color and look of the door. Usually a garage door will be made of aluminum, reinforced steel, plastic, or wood. It can also be made of a variety, depending on the type you choose from. Most prefer the aluminum variety, or the reinforced steel, depending on the area you live, and the weather.
The importance of choosing the right type and style of your new garage door is obvious. Not only will it offer you a convenient way to park your car, protecting it from the elements, but it will allow you to increase the overall look of your home, increasing it's value, as you create a beautiful outdoor atmosphere.
