From making it simpler to park your car, to creating more garage and drive way space, to adding value to your home, a new garage door is a purchase that can improve your life from the first day of install.

That's why it is so important to know a few tips to buying a garage door, so you can be sure to make the perfect choice for you and your family. Here are a few of those tips, to allow you to make an informed decision on a product that will benefit you enormously.

  1. Know the power of your door. There are various types of motors, each one offering a different level of power for your garage door. While it's obvious you want anything to weak to handle your door, you also won't want anything too strong, and so the motor should be relative to the material of the door (wood, steel, aluminum, plastic, etc.), and the type of door (roller, sectional, swing-hung, etc.).
  2. Know the safety precautions. Every door will have some kind of safety system installed, and various features may be a part of this, from an alarm and opening system in case of a fire, to a catch to keep the door from falling closed unexpectedly, an especially important option for a steel, or reinforced, garage door.
  3. Focus on lighting. There is nothing worst then trying to maneuver your way through a dark garage, especially if you store a number of items there, such as tools. Many garage doors have built in lighting systems, that turn on automatically when you open or close it. You can also have a movement sensitive light, which will switch on upon entering your garage.
  4. Buy based on space. If you have a small drive way, you will want something like a roller, which will slide straight up, and hook into a container on the ceiling. For a small garage, a sectional may be the way to go, which will lift up in sections, storing in multiple, containers, or in a single on in the center of your ceiling, taking up less room then a roller. For a large driveway, consider something like an up and over, which goes out over the drive way, and then up, sliding into a compartment. There is also the swing-hung, which opens like regular double doors, and are very attractive, traditional doors.
  5. Pick the right remote. If you have more then one garage, you will want a multiple button remote, which will use several buttons, each of which will open a different door. You may also find remotes that switch on lights, lock the garage doors, and lock them into place while they are opened.
